justine

My name is Justyna Joanna Janik but you probably know me as Justine Sounds. I was born 3rd of November 1992 in Żywiec, in the south of Poland and basically I spend my whole life here. I’m a singer and songwriter who loves to perform.

If you don’t want to read too much I recommend to stick to bold titles but if you want to get to know me a little bit better enjoy my story.

It all has started when I was a little girl

In my memories childhood is more like a bunch of emotions rather than facts but there are things you always remember.

I grew up backstage due to my Dad who is a sound engineer and concert organiser. At every concert I would sit on the cases behind the scenes and dream that one day maybe I’ll sing for the crowds.

Music was always big part of my life. At the age of six I started playing violin. Even though I was playing for over 10 years classical music was not my thing. But I distinctly remember musicians that changed my life and made me fall in love with music that I listen to to this day. At my home there was always music by Micheal Jackson, Toto, Eric Clapton, Phil Collins, Dire Straits and also one of the greatest songs for little me: “We Are The World”.

At school my hobbies and future plans were constantly changing. I was dancing and painting. I wanted to be a designer or an architect.
I’ve been singing since I can remember but I never thought that one day I will be a professional singer.

Some things just happen.

2011 “Clash of the Choirs”

I was 17 and that was my first big TV show experience. Thanks to the program I’ve learned how to harmonize and sing in the choir.

After the show I knew that I love to perform but I was not sure what I want to sing and how to do it so I ended up studying Education on Jagiellonian University in Krakow.

During these years I started my professional vocal education and it changed everything.

2014 semifinalist in “The Voice of Poland”

It was a time of excitement, big challenges and test of my skills under a lot of pressure. It worked out pretty well and I got to the semifinals. Even though it was The Voice of Poland I was singing songs only in english. That was always my thing and I sang such songs as “Mamma Knows Best” by Jessie J, “Why Don’t You Love Me” by Beyoncé, “Hurt” by Christina Aguilera, “I Kissed a Girl” by Katy Perry.

2015 finalist in international songwriting competition

There have been over 18,000 entries from 120 countries. The song “Run After Me” was judged by Tom Waits, Ke$ha, Lorde, Avicii, Pat Metheny, Bill Whiters, Boyz II Men and more. Finally, my song occurred among the top 16 songs in a Pop category with an Honorable Mention.

2016 The winner of the 2nd place in the unsigned only music competition

This one I’m particularly proud of. There have been about 6000 entries from over 100 countries. I wrote “Run After Me” with JR Ghuenther incredibly talented sound engineer, music producer and composer.

2015 - 2018 playing concerts and gaining skills

Throughout the years I performed numerous concerts. Many of them for big audience.

I collaborated with Polish Film Orchestra singing songs like “Let It Go”, “Time of My Life” but also some classic rock hits as “Proud Mary”. I was performing with seventy musicians on stage in front of thousands of people in the audience.

I played a lot of shows under my own name with my original songs learning to engage the crowds for over an hour.
In 2017 I was invited to perform along with Baczkow Orchestra on TVN Charitable Match on Legia Warsaw Municipal Stadium. That was fun! The show has been watched by 25’000 people in the stadium and over one million in front of TVs. Thanks to that I became part of the Orchestra’s vocal team.

I was still studying singing and working with some successful vocal coaches: John Henny (a celebrity vocal coach from LA and one of the top voice teacher trainers in the world), Kevin Mahogany (jazz singer, an exceptional master teacher at Berklee College of Music and University of Miami), Jaime Vendera (voice strengthening coach, one of his student is James LaBrie, Dream Theatre), Jnr Robinson (Gospel artist, he sang with such divas as Chaka Khan and Mica Paris), Dean Kaelin (his students have been American Idol finalists, Star Search Winners, and have competed on The Voice and America’s Got Talent, he worked as the personal pianist for Seth Riggs), and polish vocal coach Sonia Lachowolska.

At the same time I was gaining some other skills. It took me a lot of time to understand that singing is not enough. Especially if you’re a polish singer who sings english songs and… you don’t have money.

I’ve learned a lot during that time: taking pictures, recording videos, audio recording, some basic sound engineering skills, basic piano, writing sheet music for the whole band. I’ve learned how to build a website, partly I became a graphic designer and of course I was learning English every day, all the time.

All of this to try to find my own way and I still don’t know where it leads.

2019 building Open-minded singing channel

I discovered that I don’t want to force anybody to listen to my music. I don’t want to be frustrated with that whole crazy auto-promoting. I want to give something! I want to share something useful! This is how the idea of Open-Minded Singing has started. (In 2017 with my boyfriend we started Open-Minded Drumming but it’s a long story and I just mentioned it to tell you that it was the origin of the name). Of course, first thing that popped in my mind was YouTube and again. How to do it? Is there anything about singing that does not exist yet? I was looking for a long time. I had million ideas and finally, I realised that there is one thing I’m good at. I’ve learned it on my own. I know a good way to practice it and there is no such thing on the Internet. Singing in harmony. This is how Harmony Games has started. One thing that combines all my skills and also my idealistic vision that education is the most important thing in the world.

Of course I’m still performing, recording, writing songs and learning new stuff just in case one day maybe I will share with you more than just my knowledge but also a little bit of my music soul.

Crucial things you have to know about me

I’m a singer only because I didn’t get a letter from Hogwarts and music turns out to be my own magic world. Nevertheless I’m still huge Potterhead and I’m constatnly re-read all the books from the series.

I’m a nerd! I love to read and overthink pretty much everything. I analyse all the time and look for the way how to be better and fester in this process.

I love pole dance! I was always dancing and somehow this pole sport stole my heart. I’m also a huge fan of stretching.

I love to travel and meet new people! That feeling when you talk to someone for the first time and you feel like you knew each other for ages. This is definitely addictive.

I love food and I like to eat what I want!

I listen to a lot of different music.
